BAFFIN ISLAND - INTERVIEW WITH PUBLIC AFFAIRS REP - APRIL 1987

An interesting and educational interview with Sharon from the public affairs department of a government office in Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island, recorded in April of 1987. We learn how being a white person who's a minority can be liberating and how the Inuit culture values consensus. We also hear how the Inuit were treated differently than native Indians in the rest of Canada. Sharon tells how dog races are different here than the ones in Alaska and we learn the meaning of the words Qallunaat and Qallunaaq. She discusses the reason names are being changed and just what those names mean. We learn some details about everyday life in the region, what Apex is, and the dangers of a whiteout.
